This webinar offers a unique opportunity to gain insight into how advanced research infrastructure supports innovation and industrial development within biofuels, sustainable transport, and the energy transition.

At Arendalsuka 2026, Bio4Fuels brought together representatives from industry, research, and civil society to discuss the role of biofuels in the future transport system.

A key message from the debate was that demand for sustainable fuels is growing, particularly in the maritime and aviation sectors. Biofuels are already available and can deliver significant emission reductions today, yet many stakeholders believe current frameworks do not provide sufficient incentives for wider adoption.

The discussion also highlighted a striking paradox: Norway has the technology, expertise, and biomass resources needed to produce advanced biofuels, but imports most of what it uses. Panelists pointed to investment risk and a lack of long-term predictability as major barriers to scaling domestic production.

Several speakers also emphasized the need for clearer and more consistent policy support. While ambitions for emission reductions are high, stronger incentives and more predictable framework conditions may be needed if Norway is to build a competitive biofuel industry and strengthen both value creation and energy security.

With Europe’s 2030 target of 6% blending of SAF in aviation fuel only 4 years away, the need for implementing sustainable solutions has never been greater. LanzaJet’s Alcohol-to-Jet (ATJ) technology aims at producing Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) compatible with existing aircraft and infrastructure, and scalable to meet global demand.

We are proud to welcomeDaniel Bloch, Director of Strategic Partnerships at LanzaJet, who will introduce their technology and share their insights on how SAF can accelerate aviation’s transition toward net‑zero emissions.

To place this in a Norwegian context, Matteo Gilardi, Research Scientist SINTEF Industry, and Vedant Ballal, PhD Candidate,Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), will present results from Bio4Fuels; highlighting the potential of establishing the full SAF value chain in Norway, covering technological pathways, economic opportunities, and climate impact.
